Personal finance expert Elisabeth Donati has a stock answer when people ask the difference between adults in her money management classes and the children she teaches.

“I say, ‘Well, I have adults in the adult program,’ ” said Ms. Donati, who thinks adults and children often are equally clueless about money management.

Six years ago, Ms. Donati, 50, worked in advertising and marketing. But after finally paying down $17,000 worth of business debt in 2002, she realized parents don’t teach children how to manage money.

The self-taught personal finance guru, whose education consists of an Oregon State University bachelor’s in fitness, immersed herself in personal finance seminars and books.
